All About Me & My Ratty-related Goals
My name is Becky, I'm 27 and live in Pullman, Washington. I've owned rats since I was a young teen and started breeding in August of 2005. I am currently in the pre-veterinary program (wildlife ecology option) at Washington State University.
I currently live at Alpine Animal Hospital, where I tend to the animals at night. Last year I worked as an animal care technician at the Wenatchee Valley Humane Society (Club Pet), and before that I spent almost 7 years in the Army. I have been all over the world thanks to the Army, and even lived in Germany for three years, where I adopted my boys Squidge and Squeek.
I
am a member of numerous organizations including: Veterans of Foreign Wars,
the American Legion, Children Inc., RatsPacNW, American Fancy Rat and Mouse
Association, World Wildlife Fund, National Wildlife Federation, International
Foundation for Animal Welfare, the Humane Society of the US, ASPCA, National
Animal Control Association, National Arbor Day Foundation, Smithsonian
Institute, Farm Sanctuary and Amnesty International. Locally, I am a
member of the WSU Zoology Club, WSU Wildlife Club, Organization of Future
Veterinarians and Progressive Student Union.
Breeding rats is a hobby for me; it costs much more to participate in than I earn from adopting out ratties. I do it because I love rats, enjoy studying their behavior, biology and genetics, and love introducing other people to them. I have owned and handled a WIDE variety of animals, but have a special passion for rats; they are smart like dogs, clean like cats, and amazingly social. Once you own a rat, you'll never go back!
I select rats for my breeding colony based on their personalities (I look for outgoing, goofy and explorative ratties who enjoy handling), intelligence and drive to be with people. I believe in fit, athletic and active rats that are fun to play with and watch, as well as cuddle. Excellent health is a must of course, and I select the healthiest and longest lived rats in my colony to expand my lines. When I do outcross, I search for the best animals that meet these criteria and have the physical traits that I need. The overall mission is to create the perfect pet!
